Why Learn With johnordphotography?
Sharing my knowledge and experience is one of the most rewarding parts of my job. I have enjoyed an amazing level of success early in my career, and I believe that this puts me in a unique position to share what I have learned. So even now, as a highly skilled professional photographer, I haven’t forgotten what it’s like to be an eager yet sometimes frustrated learner – to have a few happy accidents in my bag, but be left scratching my head wondering why that shot worked yesterday but it isn’t working today…
Having won commissions with major brands, exhibited at some of London’s most prestigious venues, and in 2012 photographing one of the world’s biggest sporting events, I feel that I have a perspective worth sharing. I believe that I have something to offer above and beyond the run-of-the-mill courses available elsewhere. I run courses for small groups (max 6 students per session) and in one-to-one bespoke format. My start point is that each course is a positive, enjoyable, and beneficial experience for every student. My courses are interactive, hands-on, and most of all FUN.
And if qualifications are important to you, I am an award winning photographer with the British Institute of Professional Photographers, and am part of the Canon Professional Network.
The Cotswolds has so many amazing locations, and our studio, kinetic studios, is situated right on the doorstep of Sudeley Castle, one of the most picturesque locations in the country. We’re thrilled to have access to shoot in the grounds of the castle, and we also have EXCLUSIVE access to shoot in Stanway House, a stunning Grade I listed Jacobean Manor House in the Cotswolds. The two storey stone mullion bay windows in the Grand Hall give exceptional natural light, and amongst others, Vogue Magazine have shot fashion editorials here. If you’re looking for a unique photographic experience, shooting here offers a rare opportunity to practise your skills in truly stunning surroundings.
While informative and structured, small groups mean plenty of time for one-to-one tuition, so each session can be tailored to meet the students’ individual requirements. Every session includes tuition in the studio to introduce the theory and the concepts, with studio and/or location shoots to practice what you’ve learned in a real shooting environment.
All courses include entry into Sudeley Castle or one of our other partner venues, and lunch at the White Hart in Winchcombe (or one of the many local country pubs the Cotswolds is famous for). You’ll receive comprehensive course notes to take away (both bound hard copy and digital PDF) and ongoing support is an integral part of the training (and included in the price). All students will also receive preferential rates for studio hire and discount vouchers for camera equipment from our partner photographic retailers.
What Will I Learn?
We will take you through all of the basic elements of photography, including:
- Shutter Speed
- Creative Shooting Modes (Getting Out of Auto!)
- Crop vs Full Frame Sensors
- Lens Choice
Every element is taught in an EASY TO UNDERSTAND, JARGON FREE way, backed up with SIMPLE PRACTICAL EXERCISES that YOU will complete on YOUR camera. The idea is that you go away with images that you have taken, and that you can refer back to later, and so gain an understanding of the effects that aperture, shutter speed, and ISO have on image quality.

“A great day and I learned a few things that now make more sense to me than before.” Ray R
“I must admit that before I arrived I was a bit apprehensive, as I was a bit worried that I was going to get lost in a lot of technicalities and jargon, but from the moment I arrived John made me feel totally at ease and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the day. Thank you John for making everything so clear and for not making me feel a complete ‘numpty.’ ” Anon
“Great day yesterday learning tips and techniques for portraiture. Good results I think, and a great course!” Matt T
It has truly inspired me, and I am now totally committed to continue practicing the techniques, and taking lots of photos, ignoring the ‘Auto’ setting from now on.” Peter D
